‘Absolutely disgusting’.

Many Terrace residents were appalled after someone spray painted a swastika on a stop sign on Munroe Street.

“Just wanted to point out how absolutely disgusting this is,” Callan Williamson wrote on the Terrace Community Bulletin Board Facebook group. “City of Terrace is going to replace the sign right away and apparently had to replace one yesterday for the same reasons.”

Christina White called it “disheartening,” adding that “for those trying to justify/excuse/or make light of it, shame on you.”

A separate post about the swastika also received many comments, with Angela Bond writing that “I am absolutely horrified to see this…Nobody should have to feel hated or unsafe in our community. This is not OK.”

This isn’t the only hate symbol that Skeena residents have condemned.

When a Confederate Flag was hung this fall in Smithers, Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chief Woos (Frank Alec) said at the time that “I find no reason to believe that the residents of Smithers would support such an idiotic act, we are building a better relationship for the sake of our children. Collectively, as a community, we condemn this cowardly act.”

As Skeena Strong reported, city officials also denounced the flag, calling it “a symbol of hate, racism and white-supremacist movements. This does not represent our community. However, we need to recognize that racism can be found anywhere.”

There is no currently no word from the Terrace RCMP about whether they are investigating the swastika incident.
