B.C. has been doing a lot better than many other places in keeping the coronavirus under control. But health officials are warning people to stay vigilant about social distancing–especially with a bump of 21 new cases in recent days.

“We are concerned about the increase in new cases in recent days as COVID-19 continues to silently circulate in our communities,” reads a joint statement issued this week by Minister of Health Adrian Dix and B.C.’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

Right now the government is trying to strike a balance between reopening the economy and keeping British Columbians safe. Many people think the province is doing a good job so far. During a recent online town hall forum that included people from the Skeena region, 78 percent of participants “somewhat agreed or strongly agreed that the government is striking the right balance,” according to a report in the Northern View.

As we move further into July, leaders are encouraging British Columbians to travel within the province. And luckily there’s no shortage of amazing places to visit throughout the Skeena. But the recent cases show why social distancing and other protective actions remain so important.

“My concern is, as we go on into the days of summer, that people will become more relaxed on that,” Ravi Kahlon, parliamentary secretary for forest, lands, natural resources, operations and rural development said during the town hall.
